Viral Marketing and the Music Industry

Inspired by a question that I answered on LinkedIn I thought I might show examples of how viral marketing has been used well within the music industry. Viral marketing is a great talent launching mechanism if done correctly. It works particularly well for bands and musicians for 2 key reasons
1. Friends trust each others judgment
2. It’s inexpensive
Word of mouth has always been important for the music industry and viral marketing is really an extension of that. In essence the music industry has always revolved around communities. They call them “fans” but essentially the idea goes if you like something that I like then you might like something else I like.
So if you get something moving through a community of fans you can quickly pick up momentum and a fan base that will pass on your musical message.
Examples
