Viral prediction: Gorillaz new video (Stylo)

Gorillaz are have turned into a huge phenomenon since they band got conceived in 1998.
Now they are coming out with a new album in a few days time – Plastic Beach – and the marketing campaign they launched is really smart and getting a lot of viewer attention.
First off, they’ve been releasing small, bite-sized clips of teasers for several tracks of the album on Youtube. See an example for yourself:
This one is the most seen of them (and actually the longest!), with 160.000 views in less than a month. But if you put together all the teasers, they sure would ammount for more than 1 million views combined.
This leaves the fans wanting for more and wanting the new album even more than before.
More: they released a trailer – a trailer! – for their first music video for the album! Probably wasn’t the first time a band did this, but in this case worked so well, doing just what it was meant to do: tease fans.
You can also listen to the full album online now, on the Guardian page, here.
And today, the full music video was released. And expect this to go viral in the next few days. One thing though: I can’t understand why EMI would want to block out some countries from seeing it on Youtube for example. It’s probably because of complicated rights management and piracy, yes, but the more people see it (everywhere) the more they’ll be likely to buy the new album or merchandise from the band, go to concerts etc.
Anyway, it’s on other video services and hopefully it won’t be taken out.

And after seeing the video, as amazing as it is, doen’t it feel short? Doesn’t it seem there’s more to it? I’m guessing the next music videos will continue the story, and they’ll be making like a movie or mini-movie out of this. Fingers crossed!
